Plug Valves

1. Overview:

Plug valves are quarter-turn valves that use a cylindrical or conical plug to control the flow of fluid through the valve. They are known for their simple design and ease of operation.

2. Size Range:

Typically available from 1/2" (15 mm) to 12" (300 mm), with larger sizes available upon request.

3. Body Material:

  • Cast Iron: Common for general applications; cost-effective and durable.

  • Ductile Iron: Offers better strength and toughness compared to cast iron.

  • Stainless Steel (304/316): Ideal for corrosive environments and applications requiring hygiene.

  • Carbon Steel: Suitable for high-pressure applications.

  • PVC/CPVC: Used for chemical applications where corrosion resistance is essential.

4. Plug Material:

  • Stainless Steel: Commonly used for durability and corrosion resistance.

  • Bronze: Good for various fluids, often used in water applications.

  • PTFE-Coated: Provides excellent chemical resistance and low friction for easy operation.

5. Seat Material:

  • PTFE: Excellent chemical resistance; used in aggressive applications.

  • Rubber: Used in low-pressure applications; provides a tight seal.

  • Viton: Suitable for high-temperature and chemical applications.

6. Pressure Rating:

  • Commonly rated up to 150 psi (PN10) or 300 psi (PN16), depending on design and materials.

  • Higher pressure ratings available for specific requirements.

7. Temperature Range:

Typically from -20°C to 200°C, depending on the materials used.

8. Operation Type:

  • Manual: Lever or handwheel-operated for direct control.

  • Automated: Available with pneumatic or electric actuators for remote control.

9. Connection Types:

  • Flanged: Standard connection for ease of installation.

  • Threaded: Suitable for smaller sizes and easy installation.

  • Socket Weld: Common in high-pressure applications.

10. Design Standards:

  • API 599: Standard for plug valves used in the oil and gas industry.

  • ANSI/ASME B16.5: Standard for flanged fittings.

  • ISO 17292: International standard for plug valves.
